Disclosure: The reviewer purchased this book with the money from her cookie jar.
I have now listened to Guilty Pleasures Audio book and read the Guilty Pleasures graphic novel volume 1. I must say, the graphic novel is so close in content, it feels like I am reading an illustrated version of the book. Another great thing about this graphic novel is seeing the images that were in my head practically come to life. Almost everything is just how I pictured it would be… even those ridiculous were-rats.
You probably know the story by now, as this is a book that has been around for quite some time, so I am going to focus on the graphic novel itself. Volume 1 consists of the first 6 comics in a 12 comic series put out by Dabel Brothers. The story was written by Laurell K. Hamilton and adapted by Stacie Ritchie with artwork by Brett Booth.
The art is impressive. But, as I have said before, I really like Brett Booth’s work. The characters appear just as I pictured them. Anita is a
no-nonsense gal with a penchant for penguins and Nicolaos is just as creepy as I thought she would be. But then again, evil children are the creepiest!
The covers are interspersed between each comic and there is a cool cover gallery in the back. As an added bonus there is a mini comic called Vampire Victim in the back of the book. A short, Anita Blake story showcasing her professionalism and her habit of recognizing vampire rights along with human rights. She may not like vampires, but she is determined to abide by the law.
Volume 1 only covers ½ of the story, and if you haven’t read the book or listened to the audio version, I would recommend having volume 2 handy so you don’t have to wait and find out what happens next. I sure wish I had volume 2 so I could see the rest of this story in all of its full-color glory.
