RaV Book Review: Shadowland by Alyson Noel

Shadowland picks up right where Blue Moon left off. Ever is struggling with how she is going to be able to tell Damon that the elixir she used to save his life has a side effect. Roman tricked Ever into adding her own blood to the antidote, which makes her touch now lethal to her boyfriend Damon. This pretty much negates any chances of them ever being together physically, and if you recall from the first 2 books, this seems to be a recurring theme with the couple spanning many, many lifetimes.
Ever plans to spend all of her free time finding an antidote to the antidote. But Roman (the evil immortal) is holding it hostage, promising Ever that she will have a chance to win the cure from him, but only if she pays his price. While they wait, Ever and Damon have to get on with their lives, as the school year is about to end.
Sabine (Ever’s Aunt) thinks Ever should get a summer job, planning to have her take a internship at her law firm. Since this sounds like the death of a summer to Ever, she finds her own job in a mystical bookstore. Her boss, Jude, is a nineteen year old, clairvoyant surfer hottie, with whom she seems to have a connection, but she is not sure from where.
While Summerland is a beautiful place where you can manifest anything you desire, and the place where spirits go when they die, Shadowland is just its opposite. Damon discovered Shadowland and has also learned that an immortals soul is destined for the Shadowland if they ever should meet their demise. He is feeling guilty and experiencing some serious philosophical angst about his decision to give Ever the Immortal elixir and doom her soul to an eternity in Shadowland.
Amidst all of this angst and physical separation, Damon and Ever have one more problem to deal with. The twins. Romy and Rayne are stuck in the Earth plane having lost all of their magick. They don’t know how to take care of themselves without it, and they have been squatting in Ava’s house ever since the incident with Roman and Damon. Now Damon and Ever have to take them in and look after them until their magick returns.
Shadowland is a good continuation in the Immortal’s series. There is a new character to learn about and we get to learn more about the twins and their past. Ever and Damon are still unable to touch and the whole “We can never consummate our relationship” thing is kinda hokey, but at least they don’t fix the problem with ease. Their relationship is in fact complicated further in this book, leaving us all to questions Damon’s entire soul-mate, fate theory. And now we have Shadowland to ponder. If you are selfish and you live a bad life, does your soul live forever in the abyss? If you were to cheat death and find a way to live forever, does that relegate your soul to an eternity in the abyss? Good questions. These books also are heavy in the reincarnation theory, which is fascinating to think about. Deep concepts peek through a story line clearly geared towards teens and young adults. Making this an interesting read for any age. I am looking forward to the next installment, Dark Flame coming out Summer 2010.

good review. just to point it out, you spelt Damen’s name wrong. DamEn with an e.
Alyson Noël lacks originality. Wuthering Hights, Mysterious Guy, Seeing peoples moods, Hearing peoples thoughts, Knowing everything with one touch, immortals. In other words Bella’s favorite book, pretty similar to Edward, Jasper’s talent almost, Edward’s talent, Aro’s talent almost, vampires? TWILIGHT!
